Introduction to Tibetan Singing Bowls
Have you heard of Tibetan singing bowls but aren’t sure what they are or how to use them?
Or perhaps you have been woken up from sweet, sweet savasana by the gentle ringing of your yoga teacher’s bowl.
Tibetan singing bowls are incredible handmade bowls that when struck and played, have a beautiful sound that not only sounds amazing, but also has incredible health benefits.
What Are Tibetan Signing Bowls Used For?
Tibetan singing bowls have been used for centuries for healing and meditation purposes. The sound that resonates can actually bring balance throughout the body and help you relax.
I incorporate a Tibetan singing bowl in the end of my class to wake students up from their savasana. I’ll also play it during private guided meditations and in my own personal meditation practice. I love the sound and immediately feel more relaxed after and ready to enter into a meditative state.
Have it near your altar, meditation pillow or yoga mat so that you can easily access it. Play it to begin a special ceremony or event. Make it sing just before beginning your meditation. Or just practice playing it because it’s enjoyable and you love to hear the sound!
How to Play a Tibetan Signing Bowl
Each bowl usually comes with a wand covered in a soft cloth. Use the wand to gently strike and “wake up” the bowl. Then, gently guide the wand around the outside of the bowl. Try to maintain solid contact with the edge of the bowl.
Soon you will begin to hear a ringing emanate from the bowl. You have bonded with your singing bowl (that’s at least how I feel about it!) You can also simply glide the wand around the outside edge of the bowl without striking it and soon it should sing!
